Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing Australia™ is a complete childbirth education programme. The emphasis in these sessions is to help you replace fear of birthing with the ability to birth in the calm, gentle, peaceful and confident way, no matter what turn your birth takes.

Birth is meant to be an amazing and positive experience because nature wants you to do it again and again!

At my Hypnobirthing Australia™ classes, I will give you the knowledge confidence and tools to work together as a team and get the birth you want.

Hypnobirthing Australia™ explains the process of birth and will train you to work with your birthing body. It will also teach you specific breathing techniques for an easier

and gentler birth. All the techniques you learn are aimed at helping you achieve a deep state of relaxation. When you are relaxed there is a reduction the of stress hormones and this enables your body to release its own natural relaxant; endorphins, making your birth the calm, positive experience it is meant to be for you and your baby.

Will using Hypnobirthing techniques take away the pain?

We don’t promise “no pain”. However, at my Hypnobirthing Classes, you will learn techniques to be able to manage beautifully. In fact, we try not to use the word pain. I would rather quote a well-known line “Labour is an intense sensation which requires all your attention”.

We also help you to use a combination of evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in making labour and birth more comfortable and manageable.

Think of Hypnobirthing Australia™ as providing you with a tool box full of wonderful, proven methods of being in control of your labour and birth.

Should my partner attend?

Partners have a BIG role to play in birth.

However, they can be feel overwhelmed and helpless if they are not equipped with the tools to cope.

At a Hypnobirthing Australia™ class, birth partners are provided with information and skills to be a real part of the birthing process.

I am really passionate about partners having an important role to play in birth and feedback indicates they really get a lot out of my classes (much more than hospital antenatal class). I recently had a couple having their first baby. Damien stated “it made me feel part of a team” bringing our baby into the world.

What is included and how much do the classes cost?

The course fee includes:
12 hours tuition
a professionally printed folio of resources that are suited to Australia’s models of maternity care
an mp3 download voucher which gives you the following:
1) Surge of the Sea (2 long play tracks)
2) Rainbow Mist (2 long play tracks)
3) eBook ‘The Little Book of Hypnobirthing’
4) A link to a video tuition of ‘Birth Rehearsal’- so that they can keep practising at home;
Plus ongoing contact with me up until your birth.
The cost for group classes is $550 per couple.
Private classes cost $850 and I come to your house.

When should I start classes?

Hypnobirthing Australia™ recommend starting anywhere between 20 to 30 weeks of pregnancy, however I welcome all pregnant mothers to class.

What do I do if I have left it too late? Perhaps you’re close to your estimated due date and can’t fit in the full course. It’s not too late! There are always options. Contact me to make alternative arrangements.

What if I can’t make it to face to face classes?

Perhaps your partner is fly-in fly-out worker, perhaps you live in a remote area and can’t make a group course. Maybe there are other special circumstances? Contact me and we can discuss the possibility of alternate arrangements or an on line course, with a Skype session.

As our Hypnobirthing teacher do you attend the birth with us?

No – I do not attend your birth. I teach you the tools to use so that the birth companion is your main support during birth and so are your caregivers. During classes I involve your birth companion in a way that they learn what to do and we have a practice session in out last class which brings everything together. During labour the support person can guide the mother into relaxation through using the hypnosis prompts, relaxation techniques, deepening methods and visualisations.

Partners have such an important role during your birth and are not helpless like some may seem to think. If you still feel in need of extra support, hiring a doula is a valuable extra support.

But what if my birth isn’t completely ‘natural’ ?

As a midwife I have seen how hard it can be to have the birthing experience you want and deserve in a highly medicalised setting.

Hypnobirthing Australia™ classes with Sage Femme Hypnobirthing can teach you strategies and helpful conversations so you can block out the negative, unhelpful advice and policies so that you can listen to your body and birth the way you are beautiful designed to do.

One of the things I most like about the Hypnobirthing Australia™ course is that it is focused on preparing you for a calm, positive birth no matter what turn your birth takes. When we are calm, positive and informed we are better equipped to make decisions for ourselves and our babies. So that you will know in your heart you had the best birth possible with the situation you were given.  In fact we are aware that not every pregnancy will result in a natural birth, as a result I am so proud to be able to offer Hypnobirthing Australia’s WORLD FIRST Positive Caesarean Birth course for when a planned caesarean birth is truly your best option.

What is the difference with the Hypnobirthing Australia™ programme?

I originally trained in the Calm Birth program with Peter Jackson in 2007. However, as a childbirth educator and mother of four, I feel the Hypnobirthing Australia programme suits my philosophies around birth better.

The emphasis of the Hypnobirthing Australia™ programme is to prepare couples for a calm, positive birth regardless of their birth setting and no matter how their baby is born.

Hypnosis for birth has been around for many, many decades. And there are quite a few off-shoots around the world.

Hypnobirthing Australia™ is a unique and comprehensive antenatal education programme that has been developed specifically for the Australian context.

Classes are presented in a modern and interactive way, with all material specifically designed to reflect the Australia experience of birthing. So to receive, what I believe is the best, most up to date hypnobirthing programme, make sure your practitioner is a Hypnobirthing Australia™ Certified Practitioner.

There are other childbirth preparation programmes out there but after over 12 yrs as a midwife and nearly 10 yrs as I childbirth educator, I honestly believe the Hypnobirthing Australia™ programme  really is the best course around to give you the knowledge, confidence and tools to have a calm, positive, gentle yet empowering birth.

Does it work?

Hypnobirthing has just started to take off in Bendigo over the last year.

I have most of my referrals from “word of mouth” as women are amazed at how empowering their birth was, and how calm their new baby was. I get many referrals from midwives as they see the difference Hypnobirthing makes. Even a few private obstetricians are recommending their clients look into hypnobirthing.

Several reviews of self-hypnosis for birth around the world and here in Australia have showed a reduced use of pharmaceutical analgesia, better birth outcomes and a greater satisfaction with their birth in women who used hypnosis for birth compared with those who didn’t. Do your Google research, it is a great tool, but also ask around and read the birth stories from my clients.
